The Rise & Fall Of a Small Film Company

The Rise & Fall Of a Small Film Company, "Grandeur et décadence d’un petit commerce de cinéma"

Synopsis

Director

The director Gaspard Bazin, a film director and incorrigible seducer, is preparing a new feature film. For now, he is still in the casting and financing stages. Jean Almereyda, his producer, has more and more difficulties to raise cash for his company. His wife, Eurydice, dreams of being a movie star. Between the two men, a perverse game is starting, Almereyda wishing to please his wife, but the unrepentant seducer reputation of Bazin holds him to require a part for Eurydice.

A restoration of a film is always good news, if it’s a Jean-Luc Godard work with a mature and high Jean Pierre Leaud in the main role, in a restored version supervised by the prestigious DOP Caroline Champetier, then is a feast for film gourmets that 30 years remains fresh and appealing.

„Rise and Fall…“ is a chapter of TV thriller series Série Noire, but keeping a thin thriller structure as alibi, he takes the excuse to make a dissection of the insides of a production, with ego’s, manias and jealousies, technicians, extras and the people working in the shadow, while the characters are trying to remember the Great days of French cinema.

JLG was supposed to contribute to Série Noire with a thriller, but indulge the audience with a gem which is a movie inside a movie about a movie, and further beyond. The best baptism for our „Rebels With a Cause“ section.
