The Faithful Son

The Faithful Son, "La part sauvage"

International Premiere

Synopsis

Director

Brussels is considered to be the Mecca of radical Islam in Europe. Around 500 religious fighters have gone to fight in Iraq and Syria from Belgium – when compared to the population of this nation it is more than from any other country in Europe. Most of these people are from Brussels.

Therefore it is especially gratifying that this acute and at the same time demanding subject has been dealt with by a novice director. The film by Belgian director Guérin van de Vorst follows Ben, who has just been released from prison and his journey to find his place in a society that doesn’t want to accept him. The sense of injustice deepens when he is not permitted to see his 10-year-old son – the only reason for Ben to live. So it is not surprising that soon he falls under the influence of an Islamic preacher and veers towards radicalisation.

This successful drama shows without overdoing it and psychologically precisely how radicalisation may take place and what are the reasons behind it. At the same time it is a touching story of a father and a son becoming closer again after a long separation, showing that an emotional attachment with loved ones can influence even the most hopeless processes. Estonian viewers should remember Vincent Rottiers who plays the struggling Ben from the movies „Dheepan“ and „Renoir“. He and Guérin van de Vorst are a pair with whom it would be interesting to meet again.
