A Thought of Ecstasy

A Thought of Ecstasy

International Premiere

Synopsis

Director

This film is at its core provocative, irritating and thought-provoking. We journey to America in the year 2019. A man in search of a lost love. A woman lost in desire for revenge. A country paralyzed by heat and lost in suspicion and paranoia. And a twenty-year-old diary that evokes memories and the yearning for self-destruction.

Actor-Director RP Kahl has always explored desire in his fiercely independent auteur films, but this time his main intellectual inspiration has been George Bataille. In the spirit of the French thinkers dictum of »wasting your life» as the final manifestation of being, the journey of the main protagonist Frank must be a road to perdition. Driving his car into a waking dream, Frank perceives the approaching catastrophe as pleasure.

Sexually (very!) explicit, this film is for adventurers of cinema who want their boundaries to be tested by profound cinematic experiences.

RP Kahl, a true renegade of German cinema, has shot the film in the desert of L.A., a dreamscape, a nowhere, a possible future. Starring as the main protagonist, he is a truly foreign element in a lost country – from his looks to his accent. Kahl further emphasizes the cultural differences on the soundscape, using music, both electronic and traditional, from Germany – leading to ecstatic and thoughtful results.

No wonder he won over Deborah Kara Unger to produce and star in a pivotal role – the Canadian star probably best known for the ever-inspiring Crash by David Cronenberg.
