The Seagull

The Seagull, "Marti"

International Premiere

Synopsis

Director

Turkish director and scriptwriter Erkan Tunç has practiced his talent in many different art forms. Majoring in dramatic writing, he started off as a poet. It was during this time that he wrote the play "Scattered Ode", where he examined legendary auteur Yılmaz Güney. After directing many Turkish television series, Tunç started developing "The Seagull". This feature is his debut as both a scriptwriter and director.

Yakup (Onur Buldu) works as a caretaker at a small chicken farm set in the mountainous Torbalı area of Izmir. He is married to the much younger Mediha (Sahra Şaş), and they live a rather conventionally dull and almost unhappy life. Yakup’s enjoyment is limited to following his favourite football team, while Mediha tries to escape by watching television.

The arrival of a newlywed couple will agitate their secluded routine. Riza (Öner Erkan), who works as an assistant at the farm, and his wife Nurgül (İrem Sak) are almost the opposite of them. Liberal and open-minded in every possible aspect, the new couple settles next-door and starts to influence Mediha’s and Yakup’s lifestyle. The traditional austerity is suddenly influenced by the new “Western” trends and the claustrophobic environment will be the perfect setting for the heroes to unveil their true identities.

"The Seagull" is quite playful with genres, having elements of a drama, comedy and thriller. Tunç subtly depicts the conflict between Western progressiveness and Eastern conservativism in modern Turkey.
